An authoritative and wide-ranging visual essay on the aesthetics of Japan, now in a beautiful paperback edition.
Japan Style, written by one of the world's most respected scholars of Japanese art and culture, defines what 'Japan style' is. It explores specific achievements in Japanese art and architecture, but also offers an in-depth analysis of the whole of Japanese culture, its vision of the world and of humankind. 'Japan style' is something recognizable to everyone: a beautifully arranged flower, an elegant piece of calligraphy or a simple rock garden, but it is also something that is very difficult to define.
The book is divided into three main sections. In the first one ('Irregular Beauty'), the author delineates the different aspects of Japanese culture and draws interesting connections between art, architecture, religion, philosophy and mythology. For example, he explains the aesthetics of the tea ceremony and its relationship to Zen philosophy as well as other subjects such as the function of the void in mythology, Buddhism and the arts.
The second part of the book ('A Feeling of Nature') follows a chronological path from ancient times to the present explaining more specifically how to interpret the different forms of Japanese art (literature, painting, sculpture, etc.).
The third part of the book ('Art Masters') contains short monographs on Japanese masters in the history of Japanese art and culture: Zeami Moto, the creator of No theatre; Hokusai, the master of woodblock printing; Yasunai Kawabata and Mishima Yukio, the writers; and the graphic designer, Tanaka Ikko.
Calza's groundbreaking and insightful text is accompanied by 150 colour images of a great variety of examples from Japanese art and culture.

Review
"images are carefully chosen and beautifully juxtaposed" —IDFX
"This poetic book analyses complexities of Japanese style. Instead of straightforward case studies on well-known examples, it tackles underlying aspects of culture with references to Buddhism, mythology, Zen philosophy, architecture and the visual arts. Beautifully illustrated, and far more than just Ando, tea ceremonies and Noh theatre. " —Building Design

Does the substance support the style?
By Sun Monk Bunny
This is a beautifully presented book that shows a wide range of Japanese art. However, I'm less certain that the information in the book matches up to the presentation. The book explores the cultural basis of Japanese art, literature and theatre. As such it complements drier books such as History Of Japanese Art.
Japan Style uses aspects of Japanese culture and religion along with the lives and work of Japanese artists from the past 1000 years to illustrate some of the ideas behind the art. The book explores each concept in text, followed by images that are generally well integrated with the text. There is a huge range of images such as paintings, prints, ceramics, posters, architecture, furniture, textiles and even sushi. The reproduction is very high quality and the images are interesting, striking or beautiful. The text is well written and I felt that I had a better understanding of Japanese art after reading the book. However, I did find it difficult to understand some of the ideas.
Unfortunately, three aspects left me a bit unsure whether the author's views are widely held amongst those familiar with Japanese art and culture or whether they are an unusual perspective. The book focuses on differences between western and Japanese art and culture without considering similarities. It only considers high art and doesn't consider popular culture. Finally, the book is an outsider's perspective of Japanese art and culture.
I definitely found the book interesting, but it left me wanting to read other views on Japanese art, especially from Japanese authors, which is no bad thing.

This Book Represents "Japanese Design" In Every Aspect
By Burcu
I am an industrial designer in Turkey who has a special interest in Japanese culture and design. One day I ran into this book. It grabbed me with it's cover design. The semi transparant material, the choice of typography and colors as well as the backround illustration were all representing Japanese style so well. When I opened the book, page designs also impressed me with their elegant simplicity. I thought publisher and editor were very successful in reflecting the idea lying behind the book, so i decided to own it. In other words I payed for the design of the book and did not expect more of it since the title was ending with "Style"(!). But as reading it I was surprised with the quality of the content:
The book begins with explaining the philosophy of Japanese design and its connection to Zen Buddhism. Than it explores Wabi Sabi rules. After this perfect introduction it gives an idea of everyday life in Japan. So in the end you can see the whole picture about Japanese Design.
I totally recommend this book for those who really want to understand Japanese culture. This is not an artsy book which only looks good and says nothing more in it. It is full of meticulously chosen information and visual material that gives you a total understanding of Japanese Design.
Well done!

Interesting material poorly packed
By Roy W. Latham
This volume has very interesting subject matter, well illustrated. If you are interested in the subject it is a valuable addition to the literature. One drawback is that the writing is often clumsy and poorly edited. The artsy layout is horrible. It's one of those things with no margins on two sides of the text and vast empty space on the other two sides. There are really good reasons why books are generally not done that way. It's not approachable for someone new to the subject, but good for someone who is already interested.
