“Beautifully researched and masterfully told” (Alex Kershaw, New York Times bestselling author of Escape from the Deep), this is the riveting story of the heroic and tragic US submarine force that helped win World War II in the Pacific.
Focusing on the unique stories of three of the war’s top submarines—Silversides, Drum, and Tang—The War Below vividly re-creates the camaraderie, exhilaration, and fear of the brave volunteers who took the fight to the enemy’s coastline in World War II. Award-winning journalist James Scott recounts incredible feats of courage—from an emergency appendectomy performed with kitchen utensils to sailors’ desperate struggle to escape from a flooded submarine—as well as moments of unimaginable tragedy, including an attack on an unmarked enemy freighter carrying 1,800 American prisoners of war.
The casualty rate among submariners topped that of all other military branches. The war claimed almost one out of every five submarines, and a submarine crewman was six times more likely to die than a sailor onboard a surface ship. But this valorous service accomplished its mission; Silversides, Drum, and Tang sank a combined sixty-two freighters, tankers, and transports. The Japanese were so ravaged from the loss of precious supplies that by the war’s end, pilots resorted to suicidal kamikaze missions and hungry civilians ate sawdust while warships had to drop anchor due to lack of fuel. In retaliation, the Japanese often beat, tortured, and starved captured submariners in the atrocious prisoner of war camps.
Based on more than 100 interviews with submarine veterans and thousands of pages of previously unpublished letters and diaries, The War Below lets readers experience the battle for the Pacific as never before.

Chronicles of WWII’s submarine war remain popular, because while most combatants are cogs in gigantic military machines, a submarine lends itself to individuation. It often operated alone, and its combat success depended crucially on its commander’s risk-taking aggressiveness. Relying on the centrality of the commander, Scott recounts the Pacific war patrols of three U.S. submarines, of which two today are on display, the Drum in Mobile, Alabama, and the Silversides in Muskegon, Michigan. The third, the Tang, sank in battle. Providing character sketches of the boats’ commanders that note leadership style and pugnacity, Scott puts each on the periscope and describes the ensuing patrol. About 25 such episodes make up the narrative, which Scott expresses in dialogue akin to Edward Beach’s Run Silent, Run Deep (1955; movie, 1958) and fills with the navigational detail of hunting Japanese ships, firing torpedoes, and enduring depth-charge attacks. Though focusing on commanders, Scott expands to describe crew members’ roles, which further evokes the claustrophobic, dangerous world of the WWII sub. Scott (The Attack on the Liberty, 2009) satisfies the naval-history readership. --Gilbert Taylor
Review
“This is the most absorbing narrative of submarine warfare that I’ve read in years. The research is so deep, and the writing so vivid, I could practically feel the vast ocean closing over me as these three boats ranged the Pacific looking for the kill.” (James D. Hornfischer, author of Neptune’s Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal and The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors)
"Scott has a gift for dramatic narrative that illuminates the human dimension of this drama beneath the seas. . . . This is a riveting tale for World War II buffs." (Hank H. Cox The Washington Post)
“Beautifully researched and masterfully told, James Scott’s book is an enthralling and important addition to the story of undersea warfare.” (Alex Kershaw, New York Times bestselling author of Escape from the Deep and The Liberator)
“Meticulously researched and vividly written, Scott transports us convincingly to the wardroom of the Silversides, the bridge of the Tang, the torpedo room of the Drum. If you want to know what it was like to fight in a U.S. submarine during World War II, this is your book.” (Jonathan Parshall, co-author Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway)
“James Scott brilliantly captures the intensity of submarine combat with his pulse-racing narrative about three famous boats of the Pacific Fleet. You’ll need a towel to wipe the perspiration from your brow.” (Bruce Gamble, author of Fortress Rabaul and Black Sheep One)
“James Scott has crafted a superb tale about a group of young Americans who went unflinchingly to war with the odds very much against them—a tale that won't (and shouldn't) be forgotten.” (Flint Whitlock, author of The Depths of Courage: American Submariners at War with Japan, 1941-1945)
“The War Below is a cut above. . . . This fast-paced book will be a welcomed addition to the personal libraries of even the most well-read students of submarine warfare.” (Stephen L. Moore, author of Battle Surface! and Presumed Lost)
“In the seven decades since WW II, U.S. Navy submarines’ primary mission has been passive, as a nuclear deterrent. But within living memory ‘the silent service’ waged a genuine war against a formidable enemy in the world’s greatest ocean. The War Below provides an intensely personal look inside the pressure hulls of three Pacific Fleet submarines that established historic records against the Japanese Empire. The epic war patrols of USS Silversides, Drum, and Tang provide gripping reading and serve as a memorial to the lost boats and crews ‘still on patrol.’” (Barrett Tillman, author of Whirlwind and Enterprise)
“Scott places the reader inside the boats for an understanding of the humor, the self-control, the ingenuity, the tenacity and self-sacrifice of submarine sailors at war. . . . The world of vignettes that he sprinkles throughout The War Below makes his book hard to put down, it’s a gripping tale that spans half the globe.” (Carl LaVO, author of Back from the Deep and The Galloping Ghost)
“Gripping. . . . Readers may find it difficult to resist the tension, drama and fireworks of this underappreciated but dazzlingly destructive American weapon of WWII.” (Kirkus Reviews)
“Beautifully crafted and carefully researched. . . . Scott has skillfully knit together the true and exciting stories of just three submarines (and their crews) that played extremely dramatic roles in the victory over Japan. . . . Their significant contribution to victory should be more widely understood as a result of his book.” (Al Hutchison The Concord Monitor)

Excellent Book About Three Submarines And The Heroic Crews Who Served On Them
By Jeffrey T. Munson
In the days following the attack on Pearl Harbor, an order was issued to execute unrestricted submarine warfare on Japan. During the course of the Pacific War, the American submarine service wreaked havoc on Japanese merchant shipping. Over 1,000 Japanese merchant ships were sunk during the war, along with dozens of warships. But the price was high; 52 American submarines were lost during the war. "The War Below" describes the war patrols of three American submarines: Drum, Silversides, and the immortal Tang.
Each of these boats was lead by one of the "new breed" of American submarine skipper. These men went to submarine school expecting to be fighting an enemy one day. Thus, they developed aggressive tactics, unlike older skippers trained in peace time. Names such as Burlingame, Coye, Morton, and O'Kane would soon become etched in the annals of submarine history. These aggressive skippers and their crews carried the war directly to the Japanese homeland. It became so dangerous for Japanese merchant shipping that it was unsafe for the ships to even sail in their home waters.
Along with vividly describing the submarine tactics used by American skippers, this book also gives the reader a general overview of the war in the Pacific. Major campaigns are discussed, and the role of submarines is fitted into each.
Author James Scott also describes life aboard the submarines. He discusses the fear of a sustained depth charge attack, the exhilaration of a successful sinking, and some unusual aspects, including an emergency appendectomy performed on a wardroom table.
"The War Below" is a fine book that accurately and interestingly describes the exploits of three of America's greatest submarines. Silversides, Drum, and Tang combined to sink over sixty enemy vessels, and their exploits have become legendary. The book is well-researched, well-written and contains good information about the American submarine service in World War II. Highly recommended.

Anson Burlingame, Captain, US Navy, Retired

Obviously I enjoyed the book. I am Creed Burlingame's nephew and served in nuclear submarines during the Cold War. I lived near Creed during the early part of my 23 years of such service. The book certainly captures the kind of man Creed was all of his long life, a quite Kentucky gentleman yet brave and determined as well.
I am also a student of submarine history and found the depth of research and details contained in this book to be superb as well. While technology has changed dramatically, the challenges facing the skippers and the crews in this book are REAL, in my view, and timeless to a degree.
Each man, skipper or not, described in this book left a legacy behind that is applicable to submarine operations today. How to train crews, operate undetected, alone and with no immediate support, while in hostile waters is simply what submarines have always done and hopefully will always do in the future.
Connecting those dots, how Silversides, Drum and Tang, operated in WWII bears careful consideration by all professional submariners today. Perhaps such discussions can be included in a sequel to this excellent book by an author that surely knows how to do research and write as well.

Searing
By Jack Sparacino
One look at the phenomenal James Hornfischer's strong endorsement of this book and there was no stopping me getting a copy as soon as possible. Five stars is only a nominal assessment in this case, as Mr. Scott's book is better than that. Painstakingly researched and elegantly written, "The War Below" is a must read for WWII and history buffs but I hope it reaches a far broader audience. Americans should know this story well, for without the nearly unimaginable courage and skills displayed under the most stressful if not horrific conditions imaginable by our submariners in WWII, we would not know and enjoy our world today in its present form. Were it not for the inclusion of only one high level map of the Pacific (several more would have been helpful) and the too small (for me, at least) font, this might be a perfect book. The patrol sequences, frequently ending in the fiery and acrid destruction of enemy shipping and warships, are not merely thrilling but highly educational. One learns time and again of duty fulfilled that in fact went well beyond the call of duty. The recounting of a pharmacist's mate performing an emergency appendectomy while the skipper held the boat deep enough to minimize turbulence is simply beyond the pale. Get this book and devour it. And if you can get to the end-- right through the passages about our men being tortured in captivity-- without being emotionally overcome then perhaps you should make an appointment with the Wizard of Oz to see if you can be granted a heart. Six stars.
