Review
I believe that it should be available to every teacher and learning support assistant involved in working with children in mathematics. Each chapter would form the basis of a fascinating training session, parent workshop or discussion. (Ruth Hale)
This book was a delight to read. The mathematical content is excellent and the approach to explaining complex concepts is exceptionally good!'
,-Dr Jennifer Way, University of Sydney
'I'm a really big fan of this book: it is the single most influential text in my experience of working with primary maths teachers in the last 12 years. It is influential because it speaks to them clearly and in such a way that they can directly see its relevance to their practice'
- Andy Tynemouth, Every Child Counts National Adviser, Edge Hill University
'Every teacher of maths should read this book! It is well-structured and easy to read and helps you understand the fundamental building blocks that you need to make children aware of, so they can correctly construct their own understanding of numbers. I thought I knew quite a bit about maths but this book helped me realize why some of my children are struggling with doing simple word problems. Actually, it gave me LOTS of reasons why they might be struggling, as well as a variety of activities I can adapt to help them change some of their misconceptions'

Excellent guide to thinking aqbout and practice with young children on math
By Peter Kleinbard
This a terrific treatment of an important topic. It provides in each chapter a detailed summary of the meaning of various mathematical processes and concepts from counting to shape and space and beyond to problem-solving. With each chapter, it looks also at how children understand these ideas, and some of the misunderstandings that occur. It provides comments and examples from actual work with children and from teachers. Each chapter also has a series of problems to try with children (mostly 6- 8 years of age), and then a summary and bibliography of research. I work as a volunteer with young children and am not trained in that work or math. Despite my slim background in these areas, I found this book very clear, and immediately helpful in my work the children.
