Review
This adaption of The Empire Strikes Back packs just as much of a punch as the original film. The conceit here is to create a Jedi-in-training manual by telling the story through Luke Skywalker’s second-person narration... Gidwitz cheekily—but lovingly—re-creates what’s considered by many to be the strongest of the films... Various asides address the reader with lessons on meditation and self-control... This is less a direct translation and more of one author’s enthusiastic conversation with a beloved story. Brace for a brand-new crop of Padawans.—Booklist

Fantastic Book!
By jlarson
When my twelve-year-old son finished this book last night, he brought it with him into the living room and told me, "Dad, there are no words to describe how good this book was."
My son started out as a very reluctant reader. It has only been in the last year where his reading habits have soared. However, he is very picky about what books he spends his time in. If he doesn't like something, he doesn't finish it, (except for assigned reading in school, of course) Well, he ate these pages up in a couple days. He loved it and was beyond fascinated by the whole concept of becoming a Jedi. He took the exercises the author gives for Jedi training, and practiced them with as much passion as he does when playing football and basketball. He is an intense kid, and he knows what he likes, and I must say, he adored this book.
Infact, he adored it so much, that on the same night he finished it, his little sister just happened to be struggling with falling asleep by herself because of her fears, and he read her the chapter in the book where there is an exercise to help you face your fears. It was a joy to watch my son read to his little sister, trying to bring her comfort through her struggles.
Buy this book for your kids. Buy this book for yourself! Buy every book in this awesome trilogy. This one is unique and powerful, written in the 2nd person, which isn't common but altogether just as powerful and twice as fun! And if you've read any of Adam Gidwitz's hilarious/creepy series, A Tale Dark and Grimm, you'll find that same charming voice here.
Great book, and many thanks to the author and publisher for creating it.

The Inescapable Difficulty with the Anthology Approach ...
By Steven J. Buckshaw
I loved the first one in this set, she made the story come alive in a brand new way exactly as intended ... Obviously with different authors for each, you get a different approaches. The change of style here is jarring and a bit disappointing. This one skews young, as opposed to the all-ages tone that Bracken managed perfectly in the predecessor. On the one hand, Gidwitz has a very strong idea -- the use of second person to put the reader in Luke's shoes, with Jedi lessons directly addressed to the reader intercut among the chapters. Those ideas both work pretty darn well. What works less well are occasional somewhat snarky references to stuff outside the Star Wars galaxy. Describing Threepio as a gold Tin Man, for example. The storyteller can make those sorts of cultural comparisons if the protagonist is from our world -- but Luke isn't. Breaks the spell. It feels clumsy. I must acknowledge that I'm not the target audience for this book. It will probably delight most of the kids it's aimed at. I only wish I had a version of the story that fit better with the first book. It's not Gidwitz's fault; I don't imagine that was part of his assignment. It was the editor's mistake when they assembled this project. This trilogy is beautiful packaged as a unified set when it fundamentally isn't and can't be (and possibly shouldn't be), because of the way it was conceived. In fact I still love the idea of different voices trying different things with this saga, and there is much to enjoy here, despite the bits of this particular attempt I didn't care for. I'm curious how the next guy will do with Jedi.

Fantastic YOUNG READER Novelization
By Sarah Gesell
The negative reviews of this book are misplaced -- this is not a book aimed at adults and it does a FANTASTIC job telling the story of "The Empire Strikes Back" to young readers.
As an adult fan, I have enjoyed all of the new Star Wars books to be released as part of the Journey to the Force Awakens. It is important, however to REMEMBER what age these books are aimed at! This book, and the others in this series, are EARLY READER novelizations of the original trilogy. There is PLENTY here for adults to enjoy but this is aimed at children ages 8-12.
This is a WONDERFUL book for a young Star Wars fan or a child you want to introduce to the series. This book is written in second-person perspective and has interspersed "Jedi Lessons" to help readers learn the ways of a Jedi. These things combine to create a brilliantly immerse world for the CHILDREN this is aimed at.
The re-telling of the movie is spot-on and with a number of fun extra lines and moments. The Jedi lessons are delightful and focus on meditation, staying calm in an emergency/situation, and emotional balance.
If you're considering this book for you children, don't hesitate. It's a fantastic read.
And if you're an adult fan, sit back and enjoy a quick, easy stroll through Episode V -- while keeping in mind WHO this book was written for.
