Life changing advice and practical steps to help anyone get started in overcoming multiple sclerosis!

This book is quite simply required reading for anyone with MS or anyone who knows someone with MS. There is also strong evidence suggesting the lifestyle is extremely beneficial for anyone having (or wishing to prevent) any of the 'autoimmune' diseases that are currently so prevalent in the western world!

I have been following the OMS lifestyle approach for 7 years now and I couldn't be happier or more grateful. I have gone from a rapidly deteriorating situation to one of complete health without any symptoms - something very unusual according to statistics for those following so-called 'normal' treatment plans. The approach and lifestyle are simple to adapt, and Professor Jelinek provides you with all of the scientific evidence you will need to begin a life-changing health journey. The real life advice on getting started is simple to understand...especially if using the overwhelming backdrop of supporting science.

Simple, sharp and insightful book about the financial crisis

This is a highly instructive book for anyone looking for insights into the current financial crisis. In the direct aftermath of the crisis, elites around the world claimed that its scale and effect were simply unforeseeable. Mary Mellor's book makes a strong case for the opposite conclusion. The credit crunch wasn't a mere accident, but the logical breakdown of a flawed system.

According to Mellor, one of the reasons why the financial meltdown came as a surprise was that governments and central banks became oblivious of the social and political base of money. While the modern system of money issue has shifted the direction of the economy towards private, commercial hands, the economic functioning of money continues to rely on social trust and public authority. This was evidenced when the privatised financial system collapsed and bankers quickly turned to the public sector for help. Although often decried and regarded as parasitic upon the wealth creating process, the state was suddenly expected to provide unlimited sums of money to stabilise financial systems.

The neo-liberal rejection of financial surveillance and regulation enabled a spiralling increase in credit creation, debt securitisation and investments in financial products. Through shadowy banking systems, unregulated banks and non-bank financial institutions became entangled with the regulated banking system. In many cases, states were complicit in this process. The productive sector itself engaged heavily in financial trading. As Mellor points out, Enron started as a pipe laying company and ended up as speculators in energy trading. When money is only invested in money, as in any pyramid scheme, the system needs a constant supply of new investors, otherwise it will collapse. And as it ran out of markets, all that was left were the poor. But, whilst for credit companies the most profitable borrower is the regular defaulter who pays maximum interest and penalty fees, the sub-prime mortgage market proved to be a risk too far. "It's not without irony", Mellor points out, "that financialised capitalism fell because of its exploitation of the very poor."

Given her analysis, it is no surprise that Mellor wants to reclaim the money system from the profit-driven market economy and make it subject again to democratic control. The current system of debt-based money creation triggers a permanent growth imperative within the economy, whereby work is undertaken to maximise profit and not for social benefit. According to Mellor, the system should shift towards a more ecologically sustainable economy, without destructive growth, and be more embedded in the totality of human existence within the natural world. This implies public ownership of the credit and banking system. Also, public money could be issued for social incomes such as pensions, or provide citizens with a basic income to support more creative, educational, community or caring work.

To some this may seem utopian, but, as Mellor notes: "Reclaiming money as public money is not such an impossible task, given that the privatisation of money is an illusion, as the only mechanism that can guarantee the security of the money system is the public authority of the state."

Great book if you ignore the annoying style.

This was the required text for an English/Linguistics class that I took, and it's fantastic as an introduction or refresher. It surveys the most important fields in linguistics and gives equal time to each subfield, even going into traditionally ignored areas like Stylistics. The layout makes everything clear, there are plenty of charts, and there's a helpful glossary in the back for quick reference. It helps to reread some areas, specifically those on syntax, but it's worth the effort. There are also mini-profiles on selected linguistics who have made an impact in the field, and this helps to put a face on what at first seem like cold, technical theories. Linguistics is a great field, and this book does much to pique the reader's interest in it. I would highly recommend this book to any English student who's interested in the structure of English and is considering getting into Linguistics. The information in it is that good.

While the information is fantastic, the tone of the book is a bit too college-y for my taste. I realize that this text is for college students, but frequent references to dorms rooms scattered with pizza boxes and staying out late with "bros" can get annoying. Also, the authors can get too clever at times, like when they explain how nouns work by using the noun "noun" as the example. Cute, but likely to confuse the dickens out of someone who's not used to the subject.

That's a minor quibble with an otherwise fantastic book. For those who question it's use as an introductory text for future linguistics students, I can only suggest that by becoming intimately familiar with how your own language works, you will be better prepared to tackle something as complicated as Tsez or Hadza. This text keeps the examples in familiar territory, and once someone is comfortable enough they can then use what they know to pick apart something unfamiliar. After this text, something like Ladefoged's "Course In Phonetics" may be the next logical step.

Great book if you're interested in English

I was assigned this book for a class I was taking, Modern English Grammer, and to be honest, as much as I enjoy English I was not looking forward to reading a book about how it works! This one, however, is written in an informitive, yet readable format. Meaning - it teaches and breaks down what it needs to, but there are interesting stories and tidbits to explain, apply, etc. All in all, I thought it was a really good book for this field and if you're interested in English as a teacher or student this is a good book to add to your bookshelf.

May look like a coffee table book but do not be fooled! Has so many maps, illustrations and archaeological information. Used for my Archaeology uni degree and have used it since as a great resource. Covers all aspects of Roman Britain. If you only have one book relating to Roman Britain then choose this one - you can't go wrong!!
