Nice

There are many introductions to algebraic geometry focusing on similar topics to this one (varieties affine and projective). However this one is especially friendly to newcomers and is the only such book that I think is accessible to an average undergraduate (junior or senior year). It is very well written with excellent examples. If you are interested in algebraic geometry you will definately need to proceed beyond this book, but it is a very nice first step.

The book at least cracks the door open?

This book seems like a breath of fresh air in a very stale
area of mathematics. He provides an opening that my other book
on the area didn't:Algebraic Geometry.
If it wasn't that he uses terms like 'Ideal' without any real
definition, I would have given the book five stars.
I shopped really hard before buying this book
and read the index and table of contents online.
For once I'm not disappointed. I have four pages turned down from my first read through and it may take some more time and study to
get more out of it, but it does seem to be an honest teaching effort
in print. I say that it well done.

Wait for 2nd Edition

Hassett tries to give a more concrete approach to classical algebraic geometry by teaching Grobner Basis early and focus on computational algorithms every step of the way. Although this pedagogical idea is good, the book is not. It is rushed and published way too early; it feels very much like lecture notes. It is not surprising then that the book is plagued by many serious problems.

The Good:
1. Introducing Grobner Basis technique early is a good idea. GB provides a powerful tool for experimenting with many of the later concepts in the book.

2. The book offers ample examples. All difficult concepts are immediately followed by a relatively detailed example.

3. There are many exercises, varying in difficulty. Many of the exercises are computational and I highly recommend that the reader use a computer commutative algebra program to help solve them.

The Bad:

1. Mistakes
Hassett's book is riddled with false statements. Some are blatant and minor, some are subtle and occur in statement of major theorems. Luckily, a careful reader with effort can catch all of the mistakes so the book is still read-able.

2. Leaps in Logic
Hassett's proofs and exposition often lack detail. He is especially hand-wavy on the algebra aspect; many k-algebra isomorphisms are simply asserted and not justified in any degree.

3. Lacking in Geometric Intuition
This is specifically referring to chapter 3 and 4. Hassett presents the definition of morphism and rational and related theorems without giving the reader any idea how they relate to the geometry of polynomial maps.

4. Lack of Graphics
This relates to the lack in geometric intuition. The amount of visual aid in this book is very sparse; what little graphics present are almost all useless.

Overall, I felt that this book did a poor job of teaching a mathematics student how to rigorously think about algebraic geometry. Hassett's most grave problem is that it glosses over steps of critical proofs early on and leaves reader confused about how to actually go about proving even rudimentary propositions on their own.

To use an analogy: an introductory algebra student might not know how to prove Lagrange's theorem on their own, but when presented when a possible proof, they should at least be able to tell whether the proof is rigorous and correct. For me, Hassett's text fails in this respect; I have trouble after reading the book to tell whether my proofs are rigorously enough or not. (this is not due to my own lack of mathematical maturity; I have taken a year of algebra)

This book has great potential to be a classic in algebraic geometry but as of now, it falls far far short. I would recommend that readers Wait for the second edition of Hassett's book and use the introductory algebraic geometry text by Joe Harris in the mean time.

Dozens of pictures, interviews with racers and builders, race histories, modifications and changes and the actual chassis histories of each car (who owned it when, where it raced, finishes, damage and rebuilds, drivers, current disposition, etc.). Perhaps your car is listed.

This book has been out of print for over a decade. It sold out rapidly after its initial issue and a second edition was printed two years later which also sold out. It has not be reprinted since. At first heft, this 14-and-a-half pound retrospective might seem excessive and ostentatious; once one starts turning the pages, however, it's hard to imagine the work any smaller. Following a warm introduction by Audrey Hepburn (presenting Lauren with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992), Lauren takes readers on a pictorial history of his life, family and work. Every photograph is rich with texture and depth, rendered in a style immediately familiar to anyone who's flipped through a fashion mag over the past several decades, but far more striking and sumptuous in this large format (each easily worth two or three times the standard thousand words). Beautiful Book

I had the opportunity to view this book in the store and it is gorgeous. Gigantic glossy photographs, many of Ralph Lauren and his family. I was waiting for this book to come out because I am a huge Ralph Lauren fan. That said, in my mind, I sort of thought this book would dissect his fashions over the past four decades. While his styles have the reputation of being timeless, the designer certainly has evolved and a book that started with his ties to his initial designs, perhaps examples of the tweed jacket he bought for his wife, etc. then moving to the polos, Blue and Black Label, Home and lifestyle, that would have made a fantastic book. This is not quite a book on the evolution of Ralph Lauren designs over the past four decades. This is more a collection of very beautiful photographs and some editorial. It is beautiful, no question. But had I purchased it sight unseen, I would have been expecting a different book, a forty year retrospective, with initial designs, runway, retail versions, fabrics, British lifestyle influences, etc.

STUNNING HUGE 14 pound book showing Mr Ralph at his best.....BUT....

First....This is an AWESOME book. No doubt about it. It is HUGE. It weights 14 1/2 pounds!!! It is really beautiful. The photos are just what you'd expect from Mr. Ralph. Sweeping, grand and elegant. There are over 700 photos..Large and small. Not a lot of text but enough to keep you well wrapped up.

BUT....Well...Really 2 buts....I am a HUGE fan of Lauren's western vintage inspired line of clothing called "RRL" or "Double RL". Have been since 1993. Was a little let down that there are only about 8 pics related to this line which Ralph admits many many times is his true passion and love in his vast empire of styles and brands.
On the upside...There are LOTS of photos from the first western collection in 1979 that was really the groundbreaking for all his RRL and Western/Roughwear/Santa Fe collections since. Many not seen in some 25 years. AA++ on that.

SECOND BUT....There are little to NO STORE photos. Inside or out of the shops. In my humble opinion...This is about 75% of Lauren's pure gift. HIS STORES!! There are unlike any other stores in the world!! Th sheer scope that each store has..It's own style depending on it's location, the accents, the style direction, etc. You can spend hours just wondering through his stores in awe. MAJOR minus in this book. DDD---

Upside again....There are many many photos NEVER published before. Most from early ad spreads. Lauren's early ads were often 15 to 20 magazine pages long...Like mini movies. Remember them all quite well from my early adulthood. Very nice to see new/old images. AAA+++

OVERALL...Excellent book. We all know Lauren could have (without any effort due to the wealth of material to draw from) split this book up into 3 or 4 or even 5 volumes. His life, the stores, the ads, the designs...hell....even the millions of dogs just used in his ads alone could fill a 200+ page coffee table book. I guess to totally cover all the Lauren aspects, you'd need a 30 pound book!

If you and Mr Ralph are very very close friends. You will WANT this book. Well worth the hefty price. Thanks Mr. Ralph for 40 years of letting us live our movies with you as the director, scripter and set designer. GREAT RIDE!!

P.S. You will need a REALLY BIG and REALLY strong coffee table for this book. Take my word.

Ralph Lauren reinvented fashion based on his vision of the past. To sum up his world in a word, it is Romance. These photos represent not only a fashion still but a pastiche of what we would like our pasts to be.
Working class or privileged, it shows a world where everyone can be proud. I rejected the naysayers who chafe at this working class guy from Long Island reminding us of Wasp and Cowboy Chic. This is Americana in all it permutations and if he becomes a billionaire in the process, isn't that American as well.

Long-Awaited, Important, But Flawed

Edgard Varese was one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century, but somehow no English-language biography of this titan was ever published, until now. I have been awaiting this publishing event for more than 25 years. That this book fills such a major void accounts for most of the 3 stars I gave it. Alan Clawson is generally known as a rock historian, and his style is probably better suited to that. He gives us the details of Varese's life as well as some glimpses of the private man, and does a decent enough job of it. There is also adequate description of Varese's too-infrequent published compositions. But he refers to himself much too often for the biography of a man he never met - and mostly of the "Yeah, I remember listening to the Beatles on my car radio" variety, transferred onto the avant-garde composer. And such flippant words and phrases as "kinda", "feller", and "Oh, Gawd" serve as a jarring distraction from the subject and call still more unneeded attention to the author. There is also a chapter and a half devoted to Frank Zappa, an admirer of Varese. Nothing wrong with that per se, I guess, but I fail to see how Zappa's arrest on a morals charge falls within the scope of this book. There is virtually nothing on how Varese's influence can be heard in Zappa's music. If you like Varese and have wanted to learn more about him, go ahead and get the book. But if you've waited a quarter-century as I have, you may not find it entirely worth the wait.

I'm Still Waiting for a Varese Biography!!!

The English-speaking music world has been waiting for a comprehensive biography of musical maverick Edgard Varese for nearly a century. Varese is probably the only important contemporary composer who has never been the recipient of scholarly attention. So imagine my delight when I picked up this book on a recent trip to St. Louis. Finally, the English biography of the elusive composer that I'd been waiting for! Unfortunately, after reading the book, I'm still waiting for a good book on the composer.
This book, written by rock biographer Alan Clayson, is the single worst musical biography I've ever read. Clayson is better known for his tomes on the Beatles, including the popular Backbeat, which told the story of the Beatles' early years in Germany. Unfortunately, he brings the same gossipy qualities and rock-magazine journalist prose to this enterprise and the results are really poor. The facts of Varese's life are basically not very exciting. Like most composers, Varese's profession was solitary and, in his case, marked by extended periods of inaction. Clayson is reduced to creating imaginative scenes and undocumented reactions in an effort to "spice" up the biographical skeleton. He also injects his own opinions into the narrative liberally, ascribing to Varese contempt for more popular composers like Copland that is not bourn out by the facts. And he reserves a chapter and a half for Frank Zappa, a figure that, though he was indeed a great proponent of the composer, never met the man.
All of this would be merely annoying but could be justified if Clayson had anything of interest to say about Varese's compositions. After all, the most interesting thing about a composer is always the music. But Clayson is mind-numbingly braindead when it comes to speaking about music. There is no analysis of the works in question. Rather, Clayson is given to speaking in purple prose about his dubious impressions of the compositions. Ameriques in particular is subjected to ridiculous treatment, as Clayson blathers on about "the otherworldly deliberation of a dream's slow motion in its paranormal and fragmented mindscapes of frontier forts and wide white spaces on a map of emptiness." Often, Clayson seems proud of his musical ignorance, as he ridicules theorists subjecting works like Density 21.5 to analysis, as if the desire to study a seminal modern score is somehow base.
The shame of it is that Varese is a composer that is endlessly fascinating, even given his very small surviving output. No follower of the "isms" of the 20th century, Varese made his own way, and indeed proved prophetic. He was an early and enthusiastic pioneer in electronic music and predicted the day when performers would be replaced by machines capable of directly communicating a composer's thought to an audience, something that, for better or worse, is increasingly common in these days of MIDI. And his attitude toward music as organized sound has had wide-ranging influence in the world of 20th century composition and even experimental rock. All of this is makes the composer a fruitful subject for a comprehensive biography. Someday, someone with ability will attempt the biography I've been waiting for. Until that day, Clayson's book is all we've got. My suggestion is to be patient and don't waste your money on this drivel.

Varese deserves better

Varese urgently deserves a decent and independent biography and an approachable analysis of his musical works.
Clayson is not up to either task. This book is poorly written, full of historical inaccuracies and/or misunderstandings, and devoid of any substantial musical analysis.
I truly regret having spent money on this.

Plethora of trapping/grappling techniques

This book does a pretty good job of presenting techniques from a clinch, or another situation where one is close enought to use Wing Chun-style trapping techniques. It also covers moving into a clinch possition, as well as several takedowns and throws from said possitions. It covers using these techniques both offensively and defensively. Also covered is basic fighting stance and footwork, some standing submissions, and some leglocks for securing a person on the ground. The book was made in 1984, so it may not be 'state of the art' where some clinching and grappling techniques are concerned, compared to what has developed in modern MMA competitions. It's a decent enough book, and for someone with no knowledge of clinching, trapping, or basic upright grappling, I think it could be helpful, and is reasonably useful for MMA competition and self-defense training, but mostly as a suplementary text.

Honestly, what are the other reviews talking about?

I bought the book because the reviews were very good but it is not. I wanted to improve my techniques and the book tought me nothing.
Larry uses the name and image of Bruce Lee to sell something that is far from Lee's philosophy. What am I talking about: mediocrity. The book even has a foreword from Linda Lee, whom I think was only trying to help his friend a bit.
Yes, the books "shows" a variety of techniques. But there is no deepness in it. In the two years that I've been practicing from an very good Wing Chun Kung Fu teacher i've learned most of the tecniques exposed in the book, but with a huge difference.
Trapping and Grappling in mostly about awareness, balance, center lines, pessure points, joint control. Larry's book says nothing about that. Here is a typical text sample of the book (page 28) "If your opponent gives you a front hand answer, you can loop his front hand and throw a back fist. If he parries that, you can lop again and punch." This is accompained by a secuance of five tiny pictures wich loosely describe the movement. Only that sometimes you don't know how the guys got from picture A to B. The pictures are too small sometimes to see what's going on, where the punch went or how the grab is done. The text is fluffy and the design bad. Not much effort was put on the making of this book.
Watching at a smiley face on a Bruce Lee Picture in the book makes me wonder, would he actually had endorsed this book at all?

A REALISTS REVIEW

after being exposed to jkd,concept and original,kenpo,judo,boxing and so many seminars/books/videos studying and practicing since i was 13 and now im 40 {just so you know this isnt someone blowing smoke up your a;; here is my review:there are some good techniques in the book.but i have to disagree for alot of the grappling though-dont take my word for it-take it for checking and try it yourself! try the tech on page 95 - catch to figure 4 arm lock to takedown.if anyone with a decent amount of handspeed throws a punch at you and doesnt leave it out there for you to grab like is shown in the book or as you see in martial arts seminars-you not going to be able to pull off this technique.its bs to say the least.even if somehow you caught the punch like is shown-then you use BOTH of your arms to put the opponant into a figure four like as shown in the book-WHATS FROM STOPPING HIM from finger jabbing you in the eyes or for that matter hitting you with the other hand?! ive asked this in seminars and the only answer they give me is they ask me to throw a punch and then they do the technique even more harder then they would for the average participant-more answers like this-ask a question that makes sense and ill just try to inflict pain on you so youll shut up! kinda answer! or with their arm that is doing the figure four elbows you to the head AFTER THE FIGURE FOUR IS APPLIED...... of course i couldve easily fingerjabbed his eyes as both of his hands were tied up in his grappling figure four movement and really he had no defence except for his grappling movement.i even had my fingers right on his eye and even was able to "air" hit him 2-3 times in the throat and to his temple before he swept me - so tell me who really would have inflicted more damage if this "teacher" had tried a technique like this in the street against someone who justs keeps an open mind and just goes for whats open?? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! another nonsense tech is thinking that a lin lop sau {cross grabbing hand }is going to work in the street or in sparring-sure it looks good in the movies and in seminars when the participant isnt really trying to REALLY punch you but to think that after you throw a straight punch and its blocked by your opponant with a pak sau{slapping hand}with his rear hand that you are going to be able to use your rear hand to grab your opponants rear blocking hand and pull him into your lead backfist is a PIPEDREAM AND A JOKE TO SAY THE LEAST! dont take my word for it !!! try it in sparring yourself! chances are when you spend time trying to grab the opponants wrist you are going to get hit with his other hand or someother strike! techniques like this are good only for one thing-to advance to the next belt! really-think about it.bs techniques like this are taught in so many styles/arts. no wonder bruce studied western boxing so much after he came to the states! alot of his wing chun just wouldnt work against someone with a decent jab/cross or just a good jab! of course there is even some stuff in western boxing that is bs that cant be used in the street like taking a punch to your gloves because in the street you have no gloves on! and also this dancing around your opponant like you saw ali or leonard do is a joke against someone who kicks you in the leg or who steps on your foot -moves quickly in ON YOU AND jams you and PUMMELS YOU! TRYING TO BE LIKE ALI OR SUGAR RAY! HA! better off that when someone blocks your punch -instead of you trying to use your other hand to grab his blocking hand wrist you just collapse that arm that was blocked at the wrist -you collapse it into an elbow into the his head and with your other hand you either do a pinning pak sau{palm slapping hand} or you use it to punch,etc.make more sense? try it for yourself ! dont believe me! try it for yourself! take it for checking! YOU AND ONLY YOU ARE THE ULTIMATE TEACHER-NOT ME OR ANY OTHER ONE! teachers will show you techniques but YOU are the only one who can see if they really work! teachers are not always teaching you techniques that work -----they are teaching you techniques so that you can progress to the next level/sash/belt and not necessarily teaching you techniques that work! i encourage ALL martial artists who are responding in their reviews,respond with positive and negative -by negative i mean constructive-comments so jkd gets "cleaned" up and hopefully one day jkd,wing chun etc.other martial arts are composed of PRACTICAL REAL LIFE WORKING TECHNIQUES/TOOLS THAT WORK AND NOT JUST USED TO ADVANCE TO THE NEXT BELT/SASH OR LEVEL! Charles wrote The Senior Cohousing Handbook and, together with Kathryn McCamant, has designed over fifty cohousing communities in the United States and consulted on many more around the world.

Kathryn McCamant, and her husband Charles Durrett co-authored Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves and founded McCamant & Durrett Architects and The CoHousing Company. They coined the term "cohousing" for which they are credited in the Oxford English Dictionary. Kathryn has designed and developed dozens of cohousing communities and founded Cohousing Partners in 2006 with developer Jim Leach.

Dr. Kate Hefferon is a Chartered Research Psychologist, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader of the Msc in Applied Positive Psychology at the University of East London. She is the author of several peer-reviewed papers, books and book chapters and has presented at conferences nationally and internationally on positive psychology. Her research interests include posttraumatic growth, resilience, physical activity and embodiment.

The body's role in positive psychology

The first thing I noticed about this book is that Kate Hefferon has filled a notable gap in the extensive positive psychology literature by focussing on the role of the body. The second thing I noticed was the extremely usable organisation of the text: each chapter has clear aims and objectives, summaries, and learning resources. The learning resources include clever use of text boxes, to make us think, take time out, follow additional resources and have access to measurement tools. Kate Hefferon has produced a really helpful teaching textbook. Finally, it really is a pleasure to read and a positive psychology experience in itself. I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone teaching the topic of positive psychology.
