A lifesaver!

This book has become an indispensible resource for me. One of the huge challenges of being an ESL teacher is to figure out how to explain more or less logically what native speakers know intuitively. I am often stymied by grammar exercises in workbooks that are not properly explained, have too few examples, or the vocabulary in the examples is too difficult. Dixson avoids all these problems. This book is also great when you feel a quick review of a basic point is needed, or just for a quick quiz. What ESL student doesn't need to periodically review irregular verbs? You'll use it over and over once you buy it, guaranteed!

As a high school student I had no problem speaking correctly, but could not explain the rules of English. I found 'Dixon's Graded English' helpful. Years later, when teaching EFL (English as a Foreign Language) in Chile, SA, the book became a godsend to help students and Spanish speaking coworkers, as well as a ready reference for me. In years of moving, many of my books have been lost, but I am now teaching a non-native speaker some of the fundamentals of English grammar. Of all the texts I needed to replace, Dixon's Graded English is of the greatest value. Not only are the rules simplified in explanation, but the exercises provided are invaluable.

i had lost my copy and repurchased it to re-read it along with jones's later short story book: all aunt hagar's children. the 12 stories in each are linked (1-1, 2-2) in a unique conceptual manner. together the books create a fascinating picture of the 50 year 'great migration' (1915-65) wherein american cities -- and american culture -- were completely transformed by the movement of african americans from the south to the north. these two books and jones's sole novel (the known world) are all required reading for anyone interested in american slave history. or in contemporary american literature.

Great growing-up-in-DC stories

Really good writer - and Pulitzer agreed with the coveted prize for his next work, The Known World. These stories give us an inside look at life in Washington, DC, in the 1950's and 60's black neighborhoods. Some very poignant stories with totally believable characters.
