This is the scientific side of the story introduced last year in the New York Times magazine [...] I visited Professor Kubota in Japan last year and found him every bit as charming as the story shows him to be. I watched him spend many hours talking to high school students, families visiting his aquarium, and visitors like myself. This jellyfish is an amazing creature -- so is this scientist who studies them.

He is a certified Sun Enterprise Java Architect, IBM XML Developer, and Microsoft .Net Developer. Prior to becoming a software engineer, he had a physicist career and published over 30 research papers in physics while working in the national labs of China, France, Germany, and the United States. His honors include being the author of the highly acclaimed Software Performance and Scalability: A Quantitative Approach (Wiley, 2009),  an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow in Germany, and a  CMG 2004 Best Paper Award recipient for applying queuing theory to analyzing software performance. He is particularly encouraged that over 600 universities/colleges world-wide have used his works in teaching software technologies to CS students.

An easy-to-follow, practical Hadoop text

Among all Hadoop books available, I found that this book is the easiest one to walk through. The structure of this book is more logically designed and the context flows smoothly from one chapter to the next without keeping cross-referencing back and forth like some of the other similar books. The author has given clear instructions on each task to be performed, from how to set up a standalone Hadoop dev environment and a four-node Hadoop cluster, to how to configure Eclipse with Maven to run the MapReduce examples, and so on. This is one of the strongest points of this book that can help beginners save a lot of initial frustrations in setting up a Hadoop dev environment and getting the first MapReduce example working.

The other strong point of this book is that, rather than using the boring "word-counting" examples that many similar books copy over and over, all examples of this book use the same context of mining consumer spending patterns as reflected with their credit card transactions. This same context is used consistently throughout the entire text to illustrate how to write MapReduce programs from the most basic to the most advanced. This is much better than dumping all MapReduce programs to readers without following a logical order.

This book also covers other important Hadoop subjects such as the Hadoop Distributed FileSystem, Hadoop MapReduce Job Orchestration and Workflows, Hadoop Streaming, and Hadoop Administration. After finishing this book, I found that it's much easier to understand other Hadoop books that are less logically organized than this book. All in all, this is the book to start with if you desire to acquire a solid Hadoop skillset as quickly as possible without wasting too much of your time.

About the Author
After attending Oberlin College and Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs (MPA 1975), Les cofounded and currently directs the Labor Institute (1976). He designs research and educational programs on occupational safety and health, the environment and economics for unions, worker centers and community organizations.  He is the author of The Man Who Hated Work and Loved Labor (2007), and The Looting of America (2009) and How to Make a Million Dollars an Hour (2013).

A powerful tool for fighting inequality with an "aha moment" on almost every page.

This pithy book is a powerful tool for fighting inequality – packed with information and insights that will propel you out of your chair and into action.

For both newbies and activists who already know something about runaway inequality, this book pulls it all together. It ties our extreme economic divide and the takeover of our economy by financial elites to everything from racial injustice to climate change. Easy-to-grasp charts and graphs make it all pop. I had an “aha moment” on almost every page.

Runaway Inequality isn’t a stern tome about what’s wrong that leaves you feeling depressed and paralyzed. As in all his books, Leopold is a friendly, sometimes playful, and always encouraging guide. In clear, accessible language, he informs, clarifies, and points the way to action. He urges us to step outside our issue “silos" and see the big picture. We can make different choices about our economy and our political system – if we dare to think big and work together.

A must read

Bernie Sanders should endorse this book! Runaway Inequality explains and provides evidence for the huge economic divide in the US. Leopold explains how Wall Street, out of control banks and debt, ever increasing privatization of the public property, goods, and services we depend, the rampant destruction of the environment, low wages, police brutality, and much more, are making it very difficult for many people in the US to reach our fullest potential and live productive, happy lives.

This book is indeed an activist guide. It's easy to read, and it has lots of useful data for activists and ordinary citizens to use to argue why we need political, economic, and social revolution in this country. You may be very surprised in reading this book by the true average wage gap between workers and CEOs in this country. You should already know how less than 1% of the population has amassed enough personal wealth to support themselves for ten to fifteen lifetimes.

This guide would make a useful read for group discussions. Students could use it as the basis for research papers on related topics, and unions could use it as a guide to educate workers about why and how changes are needed.

Runaway Inequality connects the dots and shows how trickle down economics has not and does not work for the vast majority of works of workers and citizens. It explains in clear language the role and dangers of finance capital and how it contributes to the economic divide, and ultimately how it contributes to the economic crisis of 2008.

If you have never read a book like this, I strongly encourage you to do so.

We find that the inequality in the United States is not just a series of happenstance and coincidences. Instead we see how the powers that be have crafted laws and regulations (or eliminated them) over time and then mislead the public on the eventual effects of those policies. This is an eye-opening MUST READ!

it wasn't that great of a book

There's a lot in here... so much in fact that I just had to put it down for a while otherwise I would have been completely consumed by it. Some of the stories themselves are short, but that's what I'm looking for right now; I don't want to be weighed down by reading a multi-day length novel with a plot that has nowhere to go (like 50 shades of grey hank you very much).. let's face it, it wasn't that great of a book, it was just brought to light at the right time and everyone jumped on board. THIS type of book is what erotica and romance is all about. Different characters, different plots, something different every time you pick the book up to read it. Just lovely Deidre.

ADVISORY: ALWAYS BELIEVE IN LOVE is, technically, historical romance. But it is very light on the history and rather heavy on the passion. It has adult situations and graphic sexual content. You will not like this book if you don't like those things. It does contain some information about fish. You might like that part of the story if you like fish.

Starts out great; Ends abruptly; Not a stand alone book

I don't like leaving reviews since literature can be subjective and the author clearly spent a great deal of time and energy on the work. However, this book is not on par with the first in the series.

It starts out great; Kate is a very likable heroine and the dialogue between her and Nick is quick and delightful. About half way through she turns into a one dimensional character who is indistinguishable from the previous three heroines in the series.

Further, the author spends a significant amount of pages introducing interesting secondary characters only to have them disappear.

There is no real obstacle to Nick and Kate being together, although the author tried several. The author throws several ideas out there only to have them resolved within several pages. The final obstacle is literally introduced and resolved within three pages. And then they are madly in love. It seems as though the original story idea and final version changed about half way through the book.

Finally, and most annoyingly, there is no resolution to the main story line. The story will conclude in the next installment. In fact, the last three or four chapters feature the next couple more than the current.

The book ends so abruptly that I had to check the table of contents to make sure I was not missing a chapter. The characters are planning their next step, set out to execute, and bam story over.

All that being said, I will read the next book in the series because I hate an unfinished story.

A Great Read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved it, in fact this book is my favorite of the Emerson series, so far. I loved Nick and Kate. they were truly soul mates. I loved the family love and companionship presented in this book. I can't wait to read the continuation of this story in Maureen's next book. I think Nate and Rose will be just as enjoyable as Nick and Kate. Thanks again Maureen for a delightful book!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great love story

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great love story, and loves to laugh and cry for the hero and heroin. This is a very great series, as well as the the Kellington series. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

About the Author
Cathy Woodman began her working life as a small animal vet before turning to writing fiction. In 2002 she won the Harry Bowling First Novel Award and is a member of the Romantic Novelists' Association. She is also a sessional lecturer in Animal Management at a local college for land-based industries. Cathy has written nine novels set in the fictional market town of Talyton St George in beautiful East Devon where Cathy lived as a child. Cathy now lives with her two children, three exuberant Border Terriers and two cats in a village near Winchester, Hampshire.

A Great Book To Curl Up With

When I was younger, growing up in the countryside, I always wanted to be a vet. I love animals and constantly begged my mum and dad for a pet. Sadly one never came and my dream of being a vet quickly diminished when I realised I can't handle the sight of blood. My love of animals, however has continued, and upon finding a set of books about, you guessed it, a vet living in the countryside, I just could not pass up on reading them.

While It's A Vets Life is part of a series of books by Cathy Woodman, you do not need to have read any of the previous books to enjoy the latest installment. While it is always best to read all the previous books, I found it reassuring that no important parts of the story would be missed. Anything mentioned from previous novels is described in detail so you don't become lost at any point. Cathy Woodman's insight into the world of being a vet, as she herself was once a practicing vet, adds an extra layer to really bringing the clinics in the book to life. I really enjoyed that she was able to add this realism to the world that she has created in It's A Vets Life. Creating this quaint countryside village and community had me wanting to move to there immediatly. The way in which she is able to deal with writing about a rocky relationship, as well as other emotional incidents that occur while creating empathy yet not making the story too sombre with the witty humour she adds, had me hooked.

Many of the characters from the previous novels were brought back in It's A Vets Life, which added the familiarity of reading about characters you already know. Maz is a character you will begin to really care for as you get to know more about her and her life, being a really compassionate and generous character. I did find that my feelings towards the character of Alex changed during the course of It's A Vets Life. In the previous novels I found that I really liked Alex and the relationship that he has with Maz. However, through the course of this novels my feelings towards him changed, as his selfish actions towards Maz became more promient. As for Old Fox Gifford, I still found myself disliking him with a passion. He is selfish, sexist and set in his ways, unable to listen to anyone elses views or opinions.

found the actions that Old Fox Gifford, takes about half way through the novel, to be quite disturbing. It was definatly not something that I saw coming, nor did I expect it to happen. While I knew that it was an integrial part of the storyline and a turning point for some of the characters, the incident was not something I particularly enjoyed reading about. Nor did I really fully understand why it happened as it did. The actions taken, however, did not take away from my overall enjoyment of It's A Vets Life.

It's A Vets Life has both characters you will find yourself caring about, and a storyline that will have you laughing and crying throughout. The Otter House books are a great series and I cannot wait to see if Cathy Woodman will continue on with these books. I really hope so. If you haven't picked any of these books up yet then I would highly reccomend that you do

ANOTHER GREAT READ!

It's hard for an author to sustain my interest in a series, but Cathy Wodman did it in her third of three books. I hated to see the series end. Even though you were pretty sure how it would all end, it was still a page-turner.

Fodder for classroom discussion

This was an assigned book for Adolescent Development in grad school. Each topic has about 4 pages (in essay format) of research information that is pro or con for a specific topic. Our class was divided into two groups and assigned either the pro or con aspect of the issue. For example, underage drinking: we presented the valid (?) reasons for allowing children to drink alcohol before the age of 21 (one reason noted was that people under the age of 21 can join the military so why wouldn't they be allowed to drink) and the other team presented the reasons it was a bad idea. This book is loaded with topics; it appears to be massive research projects by some unfortunate souls. I don't see me using this book outside of the class assignments. But I may give it to my teen daughter for debate; it would be useful for her to see how the pro and con version of the same topic can be developed.
