Rapid Introduction to Play Framework

"Play Framework Essentials" provides a rapid introduction to the Play Framework. In 7 chapters and under 200 pages, "Play Framework Essentials" introduces Play Framework and covers details such as building and exposing web services with Play, building web application clients that integrate with Play, persisting data from a Play application to a relational database, testing a Play application, refactoring Play application code, and deploying a Play application. The book also describes how developers can take advantage of Play's concurrency model, security support, internationalization support, and caching support.

"Play Framework Essentials" provides numerous code listings. These are black font on white background with no line numbers and no color syntax. The examples demonstrate applying Play in both Java and Scala programming languages and explains the relatively small number of features that are only available in one language or the other. There are also several graphics in the book that are mostly grayscale but one or two of them has some color in it.

Although there are fewer than 200 pages of substantive text in "Play Framework Essentials," the book still manages to cover a significant amount of technical detail. This is accomplished by spending very little time covering historical or background details of the Play Framework and jumping right into technical discussion.

Making a web application can be complex and Play tries to help simplify the process. Richard-Foy starts with the basics of explaining the architecture of such an application - from the client browser to the web servers. Play offers the choice of java or Scala for coding. Java is much better known to many.

Like Ruby on Rails and other languages, there is a standard projects layout for the files. So you need to know for Play that source files go under app/ and test files in test/, for example. As a practical matter, if you get deep into a project, you may or rather will need to manually go into such directories and add or remove files for debugging or other development needs.

The book also has good advice on testing whatever web application you make. One such is to use Selenium WebDriver which lets you write automated tests for a browser. Perhaps you have wondered about how nice this would be, well it has been done. You can now define numerous unit tests for your user interface and just run these all from one simple command.

A more advanced topic is how to handle long running requests from the browser. One solution is to use Ajax, while another is to use WebSockets. Either gives you greater interactivity from the user standpoint while she is running her browser. It lets your app directly push changes to the browser. A fundamental qualitative enhancement.

I love this book. I tried couple of play framework books on safari. I found that either they were were old and examples were obsolete or they were very poorly written.

Finally I found this book and it is very recent. all examples work. nothing is obsolete.

I also find that the book is comprehensive and well written.

I bought this on kindle can not even put it on my kindle,(bought a kindle just for this) I have to read it on my PC. And every time I use it at school I have to uninstall it and reinstall it, and every time i do that it creates a new profile in kindle, that i have to delete. because of security settings at my polytechnic. Every-time I exit my network the computer is cleared. So next time i enter in i get a new profile, this is pretty standard network security. My network admin told me he is not quite willing to turn of the network security for kindle and apparently kindle can fix all this on their end. I did talk to kindle for about 45 minutes trying to clear this up. they told me i need to cal back when at school together with my network admin. He said no did not want to waste his time nothing he could do without getting into trouble. So this is my s...t revue and the reason for it. If kindle manages to sort something out i might change it. They were very sympathetic for my problem. but in this case sympathy don't really help.

Are you a businessperson who needs to use Excel as an everyday part of your job? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Paul McFedries, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that demystifies the building of worksheet formulas and presents the most useful of Excel's many functions in an accessible, jargon-free way.

Author McFedries, begins by taking you beyond the range routine, and shows you some techniques for taking full advantage of Excel's range capabilities. Then, the author shows you how to define and work with range names; as well as, showing you the power and flexibility that range names bring to your worksheet chores. He continues by taking you through some formula basics, including constructing simple arithmetic and text formulas, understanding the all-important topic of operator precedence, copying and moving worksheet formulas, and making formulas easier to build and read by taking advantage of range names. Then, the author describes Excel's top-notch troubleshooting tools, sniffing out and repairing model maladies. He then gives you a short introduction to Excel's built-in worksheet functions. Next, the author summarizes Excel's text functions, gives you details about and examples of how to use them. He continues by showing you Excel's logical and information functions. Then, the author introduces you to a number of functions that enable you to perform lookup operations in your worksheet models. He introduces you to Excel's data and time functions; and, puts them through their paces with many practical examples. Thorough coverage of Excel 2016

When I started reading the book, I was expecting to find lots of pages just covering the dozens of Excel functions. Instead I found a book that gave a comprehensive coverage of Excel. While the book targets Excel 2016 it would certainly help someone with any of the recent Excel versions.

The book covers everything from basic formulas, through many advanced topics like analyzing data with pivot tables and business modeling tools.

The coverage of various statistical uses of Excel was quite interesting. There is also plenty of coverage of using Excel to solve many types of business problems.

Basics of Harmonics

This a small thin book that focuses on creating harmonics on the guitar. There are 14 pages of content. The book includes standard notation and tabulature. The CD has 30 recorded examples. The only relationship to the famous players listed on the cover is a list of tunes/cds you might listen to.
